Province Wide Filipino Youth “PALAKASIN” Conference in Toronto: PALAKASIN! Ang Tunay na Ugnayan/Strengthen our Youth, Unite for Freedom

Ugnayan ng Kabataang Pilipino Sa Canada/Filipino Canadian Youth Alliance-Ontario in partnership with The Philippine Women Centre of Ontario (PWC-ON) and SIKLAB-Ontario is conducting a two-day province-wide consultation and conference entitled: “PALAKASIN! Ang Tunay na Ugnayan/Strengthen our Youth, Unite for Freedom” on November 30 – December 1, 2007 (Venue to be announced).

Significantly, we have chosen to come together on November 30th to commemorate Filipino revolutionary, Andres Bonifacio, and to celebrate the Filipino peoples’ rich history of youth activism and resistance. PALAKASIN! will allow us to come together and strengthen our links with other Filipino youth, the Filipino Canadian community, and our fellow sisters and brothers in the Philippines. By strengthening these links we strengthen our unity towards collectively fighting for our rights and welfare and our future.

This province-wide youth conference and consultation is part of our ongoing project to establish full integration, settlement and participation of Filipinos in a multicultural, multi-ethnic Canada. Because we recognize that the issues of Filipino youth in Canada continue to be of major concern to the community, this project includes a component on Filipino Canadian youth. It is our hope that PALAKASIN! will encourage a deeper understanding of the issues affecting Filipino Canadian youth, and the particularities of their situation in Ontario thereby asserting their importance in the community’s future.

We are inviting you to join and participate in this two-day conference. There will be community-based speakers, resource persons on and workshops and skills development in youth organizing. Panel speakers and resource persons include those who have done research and organizing work in the Filipino Canadian community. Topics will touch on various major areas of concern to Filipino youth. These are:

• Migration and globalization: the causes and impacts of forced migration on the Filipino community in Canada
• Our present realities: the individual and collective experience of the Filipino community with a particular emphasis on family separation and reunification, young women’s issues and systemic racism.
• Strengthening collective action towards an empowered Filipino community in Canada

Ugnayan-Ontario looks forward to your participation at this important gathering. Please confirm your attendance by November 16, 2007.
